Lancelin Island, off the laid-back fishing town north of Perth, is the wave-and-bump playground of the Western Australia kite scene, with a more sheltered island setting that's friendlier than the open beach. It runs on the working SW sea breeze, the famous Fremantle Doctor, which typically fills in cross-onshore by midday and blows a dependable 15 to 30 knots through the December to February summer and the shoulders from November to March. Conditions range from flatter water in the island's lee to proper waves outside the reef, so it best suits intermediate and advanced riders, while the protected zone is where beginners are pointed. There's a big sandy beach at the launch with ample room to rig and land, reachable on foot from the car park or by 4WD onto the sand. Crowds are generally manageable, busier on classic summer afternoons, with local schools operating in town. Mind the reef and shifting wind direction as the day develops.

Safety Bay, at Rockingham south of Perth, is a world-class flat-water spot and Western Australia's go-to place to learn, thanks to a protected shallow lagoon and a clockwork sea breeze. The afternoon SW Fremantle Doctor fills in around 2pm and blows cross-onshore at 20-plus knots, sometimes 30, until sunset, most reliably from October-November to March. The lagoon is flat and shallow and, crucially, unaffected by the tide, so you can ride all day. There is ample sandy beach and lagoon space to launch and land, with neighbouring Shoalwater offering more of the same turquoise water. It is a popular, school-heavy spot, busy on classic seabreeze afternoons. The smooth cross-onshore wind and flat water make it ideal for all levels, beginners especially.
