Squamish Spit

SSW-WSW

The Squamish Spit, at the head of Howe Sound, is a summer thermal playground best known as a freestyle and freeride spot in a dramatic mountain setting. It runs on southerly thermal wind, working in SSW, SW and WSW, that typically switches on between 8 and 10am, builds to 20-25 knots, and holds into the evening; the season runs from roughly mid-May to October. The water is mixed flat and chop, fed by the river mouth. The launch is the main catch: it is mostly rock and gravel, blows cross-offshore, and is easier at low tide, so booties help and a day-use fee applies. Weekdays stay fairly calm while weekends get crowded, with an alternative launch and upwind taxi drops available to escape the congestion. Current and rocks make this an intermediate-and-up spot rather than a beginner beach.
