Fehmarn, Germany's sunny Baltic island, is the country's premier kite island, jutting far into the sea so it catches reliable wind when the mainland sits becalmed. The Fehmarnsund spot on the south side works best on winds from the SW-through-NW sector, with the main season from May to September and good days into October and November. The water is mixed, and a big draw is the huge standing-depth area, where you can wade hundreds of metres while only waist-to-chest deep, making launching, landing and learning much safer. The shore has room to set up, with a kite school by the water. It is a well-known, popular spot that gets busy in summer. Watch for currents and the stone jetties. Summer water warms to a pleasant 18-22C.
