Sylt / Hoernum

Hoernum sits on the southern tip of Sylt, Germany's windiest island, and offers an exposed North Sea setting with a wild, scenic feel. It's a wave-prone open-coast spot where conditions range from manageable bump-and-jump to proper swell, rewarding intermediate and advanced riders while the wider shallow flats around low tide give beginners a gentler option. The working winds here are from the SW, WSW and W sectors, which blow frequently year-round, with Sylt seeing rideable wind on a high share of days even in summer. The sandy beach launch is spacious, though tide matters and parts of the area near Hoernum fall in a nature reserve with low-tide-only windows. Crowds stay moderate outside peak summer holidays, and kite schools operate on the island. Watch the cold water, tides and currents, and bring suitable wave skills.

Sylt / Sansibar 1

On Sylt's exposed west coast at Rantum, this open North Sea beach is a proper wave spot with a raw, windswept character that draws committed riders looking to play in swell rather than cruise flat water. It fires on the prevailing onshore westerlies through the SW, WSW, W, WNW and NW band, with autumn and late season delivering the strongest, most consistent breeze, often genuinely powerful. The water is wave-prone, ranging from small breaking surf to bigger sets depending on wind strength and tide. The wide, gently shelving sand offers plenty of launch room at lower water, when channels and shallow bays open up, but the roughly two-meter tidal swing constantly reshapes the beach, so plan around the tide window. As an exposed, committing wave section it pulls a smaller, more experienced crowd than Sylt's mellower bays, so the lineup rarely feels packed. Current is the key hazard and the rideable window is tide-dependent, so this one is best kept for confident intermediates and advanced riders.
