Kealia, or Sugar Beach, is a long, undeveloped sand strip on Maui's north Kihei shore where the South Side trade winds funnel in, giving some of the strongest, most consistent breezes near the coast. It works on the side-to-side-onshore flow from the N and S through SSW and SW, blowing most reliably from spring into autumn when 20-plus knots is routine, though wind shadows off the mountains can make it gusty and inconsistent. The water is mixed flat-to-choppy rather than glassy. The five-mile beach gives huge open room to rig and launch and stays less crowded than other Kihei spots, though access funnels through a few South Kihei launches. The strong, gusty wind means it is recommended for skilled intermediate and advanced riders, not beginners.
