Punta Trettu, on a shallow lagoon in southwest Sardinia near Cagliari, is widely rated one of Europe's best places to learn and progress on flat water. The lagoon is waist-deep and mirror-flat for a long way out, so you can stand up to recover and ride glassy water ideal for first lessons and flat-water freestyle. It works mainly on the NW Mistral, often boosted by reliable afternoon thermals, with the SE scirocco adding more windy days; the season runs from roughly April to October. The shoreline is broad and open with plenty of dedicated launch and rigging space, and the cluster of schools means easy setup. It draws a steady stream of learners on windy days, so the lagoon can be busy with lessons, but it is large enough to find clear water once you are riding. The main thing to mind is the shallow, soft bottom.
