Lake Como / Colico

Colico, at the windy northern end of Lake Como, is the lake's main kitesurf hub, framed by mountains and blessed with two dependable thermal winds. The northeasterly Tivano blows in the early morning year-round at around 10-15 knots, fading by 10am, while the southwesterly Breva fills in from midday to evening at 15-18 knots from March to September and is the wind most sessions are built around, most reliable from spring to mid-July. The water is mixed, with chop building in a strong Breva. There is a launch beach, though the shoreline has rocky sections to mind. It is a popular, established spot with several schools, so it gets busy on classic Breva afternoons. The steady but moderate thermals and rocky edges suit intermediates and advancing riders best.

Lake Como / Gera Lario

Sitting at the northern tip of Lake Como near the mouth of the Mera River, Gera Lario is the area's classic thermal playground and a friendly, relaxed riding scene that suits freeride and freestyle progression. The wind story here is driven by two thermals: the southerly Breva, which fills in through the early afternoon from spring into autumn and is the reliable workhorse from roughly April to October, and the lighter, less predictable northerly Tivano that can blow mornings. Water is a mix of flat patches inshore and chop further out, so it reads differently depending on the breeze. Launch is off a generous sandy-and-grassy meadow with shallow, easy entry, though the space fills quickly in peak summer when schools and weekenders crowd in, so arrive early. With no major fixed hazards, it favors intermediates building skills, while the gusty mountain air rewards experienced riders too.
