Puerto Progreso (El Play-on)

mixed
NSEW
Wind window
NE-E

Puerto Progreso, half an hour north of Merida, is widely rated the windiest spot in Mexico, blowing on something like 300 days a year, and El Playon is the heart of it, a wide, long sandy beach a few kilometres downwind of the pier. The character is welcoming and accessible: a shallow sandbank near shore creates a long standing zone with kickers and flats backed by mixed flat-and-chop water, ideal for lessons, freestyle and big air. The reliable trade wind comes from the northeast through east at 15 to 25 knots, strongest from roughly November to July with the most consistent window around December to June. Launch room is abundant on the broad sand. A daily local community and visiting schools keep it social rather than packed, but watch for swimmers near shore. Beginners through advanced are all at home here.
