Tofo, on Mozambique's Inhambane coast, is a relaxed surf-and-dive town where kiting slots neatly between sessions with whale sharks and manta rays. It is an open-coast wave spot with warm subtropical water year-round, so expect a fun, exposed playground rather than glassy flatwater. Steady southeast trades are the backbone, with the working window running roughly September to March; northeast and southeasterly variants all feature, and while it is not the most metronomic spot, it delivers plenty of good days. The beach is wide and sandy with ample room to rig and ride up and down the shore. Crowds are light, but you must give the dive-boat launches a clear berth and stay clear of swimmers. Current along this open coast is the main hazard, so respect it and keep an eye on your drift; capable beginners can learn here while the waves keep intermediates and advanced riders entertained.
