Walvis Bay Lagoon is a vast, protected flat-water playground on the Namibian desert coast, with a wide-open, otherworldly feel framed by dunes and a famous flamingo population. It runs on S, SSW and SW wind, most reliable in the windy months from roughly August to April, often light in the morning and filling to full power by early afternoon and sometimes blowing very hard. The water is mixed flat and chop, with shallow, ankle-deep stretches running hundreds of metres that make it superb for learning and freestyle, while the lagoon's outside edge and nearby Donky Bay offer waves for the advanced. The shoreline gives huge, uncluttered launch space with little to snag on. It rarely feels crowded given the size of the lagoon, even with schools operating. There are no major fixed hazards beyond strong afternoon wind, so it genuinely suits all levels, with beginners on the flats and experts heading out to the waves.
