Avon Oceanside on Cape Hatteras is the open-ocean side of one of the most consistently windy kite regions on the US East Coast, where you can expect to ride 20 or more days a month year-round. The oceanside near Avon Pier comes alive when the wind swings northeast or southwest, building waves from waist-high on calm days to overhead and bigger during strong northeast blows or hurricane groundswells, so this is firmly a wave spot for intermediate and advanced riders. Spring and fall draw the biggest crowds thanks to the cleanest wind, while winters are quiet and summers busy with beachgoers. The wide barrier-island beach offers plenty of room to set up and launch on sand. The main hazards are people: surfers, swimmers and pier fishermen, so give the pier and its fishing lines a wide berth, get clear of tourists quickly when you land, and pick your section with care.
