Columbia River / Hood River Sandbar (Kite Beach, The Spit)

NSEW
Wind window
WSW-WNW

The Sandbar and Spit at Hood River are the social heart of kiteboarding in the Columbia River Gorge, a freshwater river venue where strong westerly thermals funnel through the canyon almost daily from late spring into early autumn. It works on WSW, W and WNW wind, blowing against the current to give mixed conditions: flatter, shallow, beginner-friendly water on the Sandbar and choppier, stronger, less crowded water out on the Spit. Peak season is roughly June through September, when 20-plus knots is the norm. The Sandbar is the Gorge's main sandy launch, but its size swings with the river level, from football-field wide to nearly submerged, and the rest of the shore is rocky. It gets very busy with schools and riders in summer. Watch for current and rocks; great for beginners on the bar, advanced riders on the Spit.
