Lagos Portugal (Ria Alvor)

flat
NSEW
Wind window
N, NNE

The Ria de Alvor lagoon between Lagos and Alvor is one of the Algarve's classic flat-water playgrounds, a sheltered basin perfect for learning, freeride mileage and freestyle. Shielded from the ocean swell, the water stays flat and shallow, with the cleanest, lowest-current conditions arriving around mid-tide while high tide opens up a wide riding area. Wind comes from the N and NNE Nortada thermal, which usually switches on in the early afternoon and builds to a dependable 15-25 knots from spring through to September, making summer the peak season. The sandy launch is roomy at lower water, though the rideable space shrinks at high tide and the lagoon is the area's main teaching hub, so it gets busy with schools on windy days. Mind the tide-driven currents and shifting sandbars. Good for all levels.

Ria Formosa / Fuseta

mixed
NSEW
Wind window
SW

Tucked just outside the village of Fuseta near Olhao, this lagoon spot inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a freestyle and flat-water playground framed by salt flats and sandbanks. Conditions are mixed flat-to-chop depending on tide, with butter-flat, shallow water at the right state that is perfect for learning tricks and pushing freestyle, though you really need high tide to ride the lagoon properly. The wind is the reliable SW sea breeze, side-shore and building through the early afternoon, with the strongest, steadiest days from June to August and a working season stretching roughly mid-March to late October at 16 to 25 knots. Launch is off sandy beach with decent space, but the shifting sandbanks and tidal nature mean you should scout the rideable channel before committing. It draws schools and a fair summer crowd, and during bathing season kiting is confined to a designated zone, so stay out of the main boat channel. Best for beginners and intermediates who respect the tides and current.
