Foz do Arelho sits where the vast Obidos lagoon meets the Atlantic about an hour north of Lisbon, giving you a genuine two-in-one spot: sheltered flat-to-choppy lagoon water on the inside and punchy ocean waves out front. The signature wind is the summer Nortada from the north, funnelled and reinforced by the surrounding hills to a dependable 12 to 25 knots most afternoons from late spring through summer, with kiteable days running very high in peak season. The lagoon is the draw for freeriders and learners, mixed flat and chop fully sheltered from swell, while the open beach gets bigger and more powerful. Launch space is generous on the wide sandy lagoon shore, with Bom Sucesso offering the roomiest sand. Crowds build in July and August and schools are active, but space is rarely a problem. Tides and shifting channels are the main thing to read; the protected flats welcome all levels while the ocean side rewards experience.
