Tucked at the mouth of the Breede River about four hours from Cape Town, Witsand is a postcard flat-water lagoon prized for freestyle and relaxed cruising, welcoming complete beginners and seasoned riders alike. A sandbar and big dunes shelter the wide estuary from the open Indian Ocean, so the water stays largely flat with only light chop, ideal for practising tricks on butter. It comes alive in the prevailing summer E, ESE and SE winds, which blow smooth, steady and onshore, often around the 20-25 knot mark, making forecasts here unusually trustworthy. The sandy beach offers generous, obstacle-free space to rig, launch and land across the roughly 300-metre-wide estuary. It is far quieter and more remote than the Cape Town beaches, so crowding is rarely an issue. Watch the river current near the mouth and keep an eye on tide and wind direction; a safe all-levels spot otherwise.
