Arte Vida

Arte Vida marks the western end of Los Lances, a narrower, more laid-back stretch named after the beachfront hotel and favoured when the Poniente is blowing. Tarifa's two winds rule here: gusty cross-off Levante from the east for the experienced, and the smoother Poniente from the west, which is ideal on this side of the bay. Because the beach pinches in, launching is tighter than on central Los Lances, and there are stones under the water that kick up waves, so conditions are wave-prone. It is a popular, social spot that gets busy through the April-October season and especially packed in mid-summer. Confident intermediates and advanced riders get the most from it; mind the submerged rocks and the other riders around you.

Bolonia

Bolonia is a strikingly beautiful natural bay about 15-20 km north of Tarifa, backed by a giant sand dune and Roman ruins, and it is the spot locals escape to when the Levante is howling on the main beaches. Being more sheltered, the wind blows a notch lighter here: the thermal Poniente from the west builds to around 20 knots on summer afternoons, while Levante from the east runs gusty at 15-30. The water is mixed, flatter close in with chop and the odd wave further out. The long, wide virgin beach offers plenty of launch room, with the southern end used outside the summer kiteboarding ban. It stays far quieter than Tarifa's central spots. Best for intermediates, with calmer Poniente days fine for improving riders.

Dos Mares

Dos Mares sits in the heart of Los Lances, one of Tarifa's most central and accessible launches and a fixture of Europe's kite capital. It runs on Tarifa's two signature winds: the gusty, cross-offshore Levante from the east, which rips through summer at 25-45 knots and suits only stronger riders, and the cleaner, steadier Poniente from the west around 20+ knots that is friendlier for everyone. The water is wave-prone and lively rather than flat. The wide sandy beach gives generous room to rig and launch, though the central stretch nearest town closes to kiting from mid-June to mid-September. Expect heavy crowds in peak summer with schools and riders packing the sand, so spring and autumn are calmer. Watch for swimmers near shore; it suits beginners through advanced depending on the wind.

Punta Paloma (La Duna)

E, W

Punta Paloma sits at the foot of Tarifa's huge Valdevaqueros sand dune, an open Atlantic beach that is one of the area's safest and best-exposed launches and a favourite for all levels. It is a versatile freeride spot with a mix of flatter inside water and chop further out, working in the region's two signature winds: the strong, sometimes gusty E (Levante), which can blow well past 30 knots, and the steadier, lighter W (Poniente) running roughly 10-25 knots. The wind machine is at its most reliable through the long summer season. The vast beach gives generous room to rig and launch on sand, and the dune downwind acts as a natural backstop for drifting students. The flip side is the crowds: this is prime Tarifa, so summer afternoons get packed with riders, schools and swimmers sharing the water, and morning sessions are the calmer bet. Stay clear of bathers near shore.
