Portugal Bay (Karaitivu)

Portugal Bay, the lagoon wrapping the long Vella Island sandbar in Sri Lanka's Kalpitiya region, is a remote bucket-list flat-water spot reached by a boat ride from the main lagoon. The curving sandbank shelters a stretch of perfectly flat, chop-free water that funnels and accelerates the wind, making it a dream for freestyle, foiling and confident cruising. The reliable SW monsoon drives the summer season from around mid-May to October, delivering stable, predictable wind often above 20 knots; crucially it blows offshore toward open water and the national park behind, which is why this is an intermediate-to-advanced spot rather than a beginner zone. Launching is off open sand with loads of space, but the offshore direction means losing your kite leaves you drifting away from land, so a downwind boat support and self-rescue confidence are essential. It sees very few people, usually just guided groups, so plan a session that accounts for the isolation and offshore wind.

Vellai Island

SSW, SW

Vellai, an uninhabited islet a boat ride north of Kalpitiya often called Magic Island, is a bucket-list flatwater spot famed for butter-smooth lagoon water and dreamy freestyle conditions. It works on the SSW to SW monsoon wind, which sweeps in from around May to October, funnels and accelerates through the Palk Strait channel, and blows a strong, steady 20-30 knots; in the winter months a NE wind opens a second season. The offshore-angled breeze keeps the water flat and clean, perfect for practising tricks. The sandy beach gives an open, uncrowded launch with ample room to rig and land. Because access is by boat day-trip, it never feels busy, drawing only small groups and the occasional school outing. The standout hazard is fishing nets in the area, so keep watch on the water; the flat, forgiving conditions otherwise welcome beginners through advanced riders alike.
