Dolphin Cove is a sheltered bay on the bay side of South Padre Island, a year-round Texas spot kept windy by a strong Laguna-driven thermal even on humid summer days. Wind is most reliable from the south through southeast quadrant, with N and NE fronts adding punch in the cooler months; expect roughly 15 to 25 knots, strongest from spring into early summer and again in fall. The water is mixed flat and chop, sheltered enough to ride clean and, when there's no swell, glassy alongside the dolphins it's named for. Launch space is the catch: the little beach has a scrappy, Mad Max feel with cacti and other obstacles crowding the sand, so room to lay out a kite is tight. It draws a dedicated local crew rather than big crowds. Watch for current and rocks, and treat it as an intermediate-to-advanced spot given the awkward launch and hazards.
